South Stream construction to create conditions for developing gasification and gas-fired power generation in Macedonia

September 4, 2013, 18:20

Led by Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, the Company's delegation paid a visit today to the Republic of Macedonia.

In the course of the visit Alexey Miller held working meetings with Nikola Gruevski, Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia and Gjorge Ivanov, President of the Republic of Macedonia.

The parties addressed cooperation in the energy sector, placing a focus on the progress of and the prospects for interaction within the South Stream project.

At the end of the meetings it was noted that the construction of a gas branch from South Stream would create the necessary conditions for developing gasification and gas-fired power generation in Macedonia. This will make a significant contribution in improving the living conditions in the Republic.

Background

Russian gas has been supplied to Macedonia since 1997. In 2012 Gazprom provided the Republic with 0.1 billion cubic meters of gas.

With a view to diversify the natural gas export routes Gazprom implements the project for the construction of a gas pipeline running under the Black Sea to Southern and Central Europe – the South Stream project.

In July 2013 the Russian and the Macedonian Governments signed the Agreement of Cooperation in building a pipeline branch for gas supplies to Macedonia.
