After the Detroit Lions opened the season with a Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Detroit quarterback Jared Goff addressed the "growing pains" associated with offensive coordinator John Morton serving as the replacement for current Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson. The Lions have since won six of eight contests, and Goff tossed three touchdown passes in the club's 44-22 victory at the Washington Commanders in Week 10. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Campbell suggested Goff is just getting warmed up. Is Jared Goff playing best football of career this season? "I just feel like he’s gotten better every year, that’s me. So yeah, I guess to answer that question, yes, I do," Campbell responded when asked Wednesday if Goff is playing the best football of his career this fall, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I think he’s settled into his own to where he just continues to take it another notch and just continues to get better. Process information, the game slows down for him. He’s playing at a high level." According to Pro Football Reference, Goff began Thursday ranked second in the NFL among qualified players with a 117.7 passer rating, first with a 74 percent completion percentage and second with 20 passing touchdowns for the season. Over the Lions' first nine games, he tossed only three interceptions. The 6-3 Lions next play at the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (7-2) this coming Sunday night. On Wednesday, Campbell praised Goff's ability to immediately "digest" the game plan and execute during midweek practices. Jared Goff not worried about being what he isn't during games "He plays with the gray matter, and he’s got the ability to put [passes] on the spot in tight coverage," Campbell added about Goff. "I think that’s rare to have both. But he knows what helps him and what makes him who he is. He’s got to be able to rely on that. He’s not a guy who’s going to be able to — he’s not Lamar Jackson. So, he leans on what his abilities and skills are. He’s playing at a high level." The Lions may need Goff's arm to be at its best to leave Lincoln Financial Field with a record of 7-3. As of early Thursday afternoon, ESPN BET had Detroit as a 2.5-point road underdog for the upcoming prime-time matchup.
Russell Wilson signed with the New York Giants this past offseason with hopes of leading the team to the playoffs in 2025, but he was instead benched after three games. The veteran has now been demoted, and he is doing everything he can to maintain a positive attitude. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is in concussion protocol and will not play in Week 11 against the Green Bay Packers. The assumption was that Wilson would reclaim the starting job for the time being, but interim head coach Mike Kafka has instead decided to turn to Jameis Winston. That means Wilson is a third-string player. He reacted to the change while speaking with reporters on Wednesday. "I want to see it through. I haven't asked for a release or anything like that," Wilson said. "I want to be here. I think for me, I just want to get better every day. I still want to keep playing football. I love it, obviously, and I feel like I've still got it." Russell Wilson may not have a better option The Giants were the only team willing to essentially promise Wilson a Week 1 starting job this season. He signed with the team before New York traded up in the first round to draft Jaxson Dart, and former head coach Brian Daboll benched Wilson after Week 3. Wilson completed 59.1% of his passes for 778 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions across his three starts. The Giants went 0-3 in those games. Wilson had a mediocre season with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, though he did lead the team to the playoffs. The 10-time Pro Bowl QB finished with 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Steelers chose to sign Aaron Rodgers rather than re-sign Wilson. At this point, there is not a whole lot Wilson can do. Even if the 36-year-old were to demand his release, there is virtually no chance he would land a starting job elsewhere.
The 2025 season was a make-or-break year for Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. Bichette struggled through an injury-ravaged 2024 campaign, posting a .225/.277/.322 batting line over 336 plate appearances, hitting four homers and 16 doubles. As Bichette entered his final year before free agency, he needed to prove himself once more, staying healthy while returning to his previous production levels. He did exactly that in 2025. Bichette had one of his more productive seasons at the plate, posting a .311/.357/.483 batting line, hitting 18 homers and a career-best 44 doubles over 628 plate appearances. Despite missing the beginning of the postseason with a sprained PCL in his left knee, he returned in time to provide a solid bat during the Blue Jays' World Series run. The postseason may have opened more avenues for Bichette as well. He had strictly been a shortstop in the majors but was forced to second base in the World Series due to his mobility issues. Bichette impressed defensively at second, potentially expanding his market as there is little at second base beyond Gleyber Torres in free agency. Bichette should have a robust market due to his history of strong offensive seasons and comeback performance in 2025. Let's look at three potential landing spots for Bichette. Three potential landing spots for Bo Bichette in free agency 1. Toronto Blue Jays Bichette has been clear that he wants to remain in Toronto, playing for the only franchise he has known. He referred to the 2025 Blue Jays squad as the best team he had ever played on. The Blue Jays have been clear that they want him back. A reunion would make perfect sense. The Blue Jays are also covered if Bichette needs to move to second base. Infielders Andres Gimenez and Ernie Clement have seen action at short during their major league careers. Gimenez is a three-time Gold Glove winner at second base, so a position change may not be in the offering. Should Bichette be forced to the other side of second, his offense should more than make up for any defensive shortcomings. 2. Detroit Tigers The middle of the Tigers' infield is a question mark heading into the offseason. Torres was a key addition to the lineup before slumping in the second half, but he is a free agent as well. Current shortstop Trey Sweeney has been solid defensively, saving five runs at short, but has posted a mediocre .202/.261/.313 batting line with 10 homers and 11 doubles over 445 career plate appearances. Adding Bichette to the lineup would add an impact bat to a lineup sorely in need of one. His offense may be good enough for the Tigers to give Sweeney another chance to prove himself. Otherwise, the Tigers could move on from the former first-round draft pick and continue to retool as they eye another postseason run. 3. Atlanta Braves The Braves have an opening at short after Ha-Seong Kim decided to re-enter free agency following a solid 24-game stint in Atlanta, eschewing his $16M option. Although Nick Allen, the Braves' primary shortstop through most of 2025, remains on the roster, but offers virtually nothing offensively. Allen posted a .221/.284/.251 batting line over 416 plate appearances, with 11 doubles accounting for all of his extra base hits. While Bichette is not a given to stick at short long-term, he would provide a decided upgrade offensively. Braves shortstops combined for a .550 OPS in 2025, the worst in the majors. Bichette would also provide insurance at second after 2026, as Ozzie Albies has a $7M option for 2027. The Braves were one of the most disappointing teams in the majors in 2025; adding Bichette would be a step toward a potential return to the playoffs.
The NFL, just like the NBA and all other major sports, has finally gotten in bed with sports betting platforms. For decades, sports leagues have spent countless hours and resources demonizing the very thing they now promote in every broadcast, TV show and sports-related podcast. As such, it's not much of a surprise to hear that individuals like Emmanuel Clase and Chauncey Billups, who have made millions of dollars as professional athletes, have jeopardized their careers and legacies due to sports gambling. With that in mind, Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes had a simple way to fix this issue: Don't do it. Patrick Mahomes encourages athletes to stop betting on sports When asked his thoughts on the current sports-related gambling scandals, the two-time MVP shared a candid response. “I mean, they let us know. I mean, the NFL and NFLPA kind of tell us all the different rules that that you can and can't do. I just stay away, stay away from it, just because I don't want to put myself in that position. I mean, that's something that, your life is so great, why mess with it?" Mahomes said. It's as simple as that. Even if the integrity of the game isn't inherently compromised by all the sports gambling and player props, it certainly feels that way. The last thing the league needs is for its own employees to hurt its credibility. Of course, athletes are fierce competitors first and foremost, and getting away from that kind of rush might be easier said than done. Then again, when the lines are so blurry and the risk outweighs the benefit by literal millions of dollars, it should be an easy decision to make.
