HOLLYWOOD, Ca. -- Louisiana is proudly represented on this season of American Idol, with Addis' John Foster turning heads and warming hearts with his musical talent.
Foster, a biology student at Louisiana State University, has been gaining attention not just for his soulful performances, but also for his relatively recent start in music. Despite only getting serious about singing three years ago, he's already made a strong impression taking the stage.
Foster credits much of his musical journey to a family member — his uncle, Galen Martin of Brusly.
“I wouldn't be a musician if it weren't for my Uncle Galen,” Foster said. “He pushed me from day one when I was 15 years old. He showed me my first four chords on the guitar — the chords to ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ — and he's supported me ever since.”
According to Foster, Martin didn’t just offer emotional encouragement. He also helped Foster find early performance opportunities, sometimes even “physically pushing” him onto stages to overcome nerves.
“He’s the reason I’m here,” Foster said. “There’s no doubt in my mind.”
In addition to impressing American Idol viewers, Foster says he’s been inspired by the camaraderie among contestants and the professional feedback that has helped him grow as an artist.
You can catch John Foster and the rest of the talented contestants on American Idol Sunday and Monday nights at 7 p.m. on KTBS 3.
