Zyair Greene, a 6-foot-3 guard from Lithonia, Ga., announced on his X account Wednesday night that he’s decided to play for the Indiana State men’s basketball team.
ISU coach Matthew Graves confirmed Thursday morning that Greene has signed with his program.
A graduate of Miller Grove High School, Greene comes to Indiana State as a graduate transfer from Division II Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., and brings with him a wealth of scoring as he averaged 19.6 points per game last season to go with 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest. He played in 25 games last season, 23 of which he started.
He said Graves is a great coach and it was a no-brainer for him to commit to ISU. Greene also looked at past commits and the talent Indiana State has had in the past and said it was a major jump.
Regarding on-court production, Greene mentioned his ability to score the ball, particularly how his 3-point shooting is a skillset he can showcase with the run-and-gun offense the Sycamores have. Last season, he went 83 for 217 (38.2 percent) from 3-point land.
Greene emphasized he’s a competitor, then added that his playmaking skills are underrated.
“I track a lot of attention on my shot,” Greene pointed out. “But I can definitely get my teammates involved on the court as well.”
Fans should expect to see him in the community as he said he’s a respectful person on and off the court.
Greene said he’ll look for opportunities to meet new people in the area, adding that he’s excited to be part of the family.
Graves is equally enthused. "Zyair is a dynamic guard with a special ability to score and shoot the ball," Graves said in an ISU sports information news release. "He will have an immediate impact on our team on and off the court. We are elated that he will be joining us as a Sycamore."
ISU sports information reported that Greene's 19.8 points-per-game average ranked third-best in the Peach Belt Conference. He finished second in the league 3-point percentage per game and led the Peach Belt in 3s per game at 3.4. The senior was fifth in the PBC in free throw percentage.
Last season, Greene had four 20-plus-point games and sank five 3-pointers in both of his last two games. In a 26-point game, Greene added 10 rebounds for his only double-double of his career. Earlier in the year, Greene scored 33 points in a win.
His career totals included 794 points, 163 rebounds and 76 assists. He's a career 38.2% shooter from the field, 36.7% from 3-point range and 83% from the line. He appeared in 71 total games.
