BURLINGTON — One person was injured after going back inside a house that was on fire Friday afternoon, the Burlington Fire Department said.
The fire at 139 Nevis Way was reported about 5:35 p.m. The first firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the two-story house, and one person was trying to bring items out of the burning house, the fire department said. Other occupants of the house and their pets were already outside.
Firefighters then made sure that person did not go back into the house as they worked to put out the fire. The fire was under control in approximately 40 minutes.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
The person who had gone into the house, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital with what the fire department described as minor injuries.
The fire department issued a warning that fire spreads quickly, so it is never safe to reenter a structure to retrieve any items or try to put the fire out. Even if it looks safe, fire and smoke can quickly grow to conditions that can overcome and trap anyone inside.
Damage estimates were not available.
The Burlington Fire Department was assisted by the Burlington Police Department, Alamance County EMS, the Whitsett Fire Department, Duke Energy, and Piedmont Natural Gas.
