The injured workers were transported to hospitals for treatment, with two being airlifted by helicopters and two others taken by ambulance.
Authorities confirmed that two additional miners were present at the time of the explosion but escaped unharmed.
Officials stated that the deceased victims, aged between 32 and 54, were all from the neighboring region of León. Emergency teams dispatched three helicopters to assist with rescue efforts in the municipality of Degaña.
Local media were the first to report the explosion, which is now under investigation. Following the incident, Asturias regional president Adrián Barbón declared two days of mourning.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims’ families in a statement on social media platform X, offering support in this difficult time.
Authorities are now working to determine the cause of the explosion, while safety concerns surrounding the region’s mining operations are expected to come under increased scrutiny.
