Manila Water maintains 24/7 water service with comprehensive facility upgrades

Pumping stations play a crucial role in providing uninterrupted water service to its 7.7 million customers in Metro Manila and Rizal. Recognizing this, Manila Water has focused on optimizing these stations to ensure they remain in top condition.
MANILA, Philippines – Manila Water has successfully completed six major facility upgrades to enhance its 24/7 water service for customers in the East Zone of Metro Manila and Rizal, particularly in preparation for increase in demand and possible power outages.
Pumping stations play a crucial role in providing uninterrupted water service to customers in Metro Manila and Rizal.
Recognizing this, Manila Water has focused on optimizing these stations to ensure they remain in top condition.
The East Zone concessionaire has upgraded the power supply at its Balara Pumping Stations 1 and 2 in Quezon City.
The installation of three smart power meters has been providing stable and uninterrupted power to these stations.
These energy-efficient meters are integrated with the existing Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, ensuring redundancy and reliability in power delivery.
The upgraded power supply units allow for more effective and responsive control of the pumping systems, reducing energy consumption and minimizing downtime.
At the Modesta Pumping Station in San Mateo, Rizal, a P7.6-million investment has been made to install a 300-horsepower horizontal split case pump and motor.
This upgrade has significantly enhanced the station’s performance, enabling it to better serve the current and anticipated demand at the Silangan Reservoir since the fourth quarter of 2024.
To further strengthen power reliability, the San Juan Pumping Station 1 in Quezon City has undergone a P128.6-million major electrical system upgrade.
This initiative includes the installation of new 1,750-kilowatt generator sets, renovation of the genset housing, expansion of fuel day tanks, and enhancements to the automation system.
Additionally, the Cubao Pumping Stations Reliability Project introduced several critical enhancements.
A key highlight of this initiative was the replacement of the station’s 1.5 megavolt-amperes (MVA) transformer unit with a more robust 2 MVA unit.
This new transformer significantly boosts energy efficiency, reduces power outages, and prepares the station to meet future demand, ensuring a consistent and resilient water supply for the region.
The successful rehabilitation and modernization of the Makati Pumping Station have increased operational productivity, reduced carbon emissions, and improved water supply for Makati City customers.
This P92.45-million enhancement involved replacing three 300-horsepower electric motors and installing six compact horizontal split case pumps, maximizing space management and ensuring reliable water conveyance.
“These enhancements in our pumping stations are in preparation for the increase in demand as our customer base continues to grow. We are committed to providing 24/7 water service to our customers as we expand our reach,” said Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water Communication Affairs Group Director.
In addition to improving water conveyance, Manila Water has made significant improvements to one of its water treatment plants.
The company has optimized Balara Treatment Plant 2 by rehabilitating its underdrain system, replacing effluent valves, and restoring the filter beds.
Completed in the third quarter of 2024, this P37-million project has resulted in a reduction in water loss by 0.20%, or approximately 0.05 million liters per day.
