US President Donald Trump on Saturday imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canadian and Mexican goods, and ordered a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, fulfilling one of his key election promises and declared that the tariffs would remain in place until a national emergency regarding drug fentanyl and illegal immigration in the US ends.

Officials from the Trump administration said that energy products from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity will be levied 10% tariff but Mexican energy imports will be charged 25% duty.

The tariff order will go into effect on Tuesday, setting a trade war in North America which could even sabotage the growth of the continent. A White House fact sheet didn’t detail on what steps the three countries need to take in order to escape the tariffs being imposed but added that the duties would remain in place “until the crisis alleviated”.

President Donald Trump had claimed in January that the US has a trade deficit with Canada of between $200 billion and $250 billion but refrained from detailing the source of the information.

Post signing the order, Trump in a post on Truth Social said “This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all.”

The White House detailed that the order imposing tariffs includes measures to increase the duty if the countries retaliate against the US, as they have threatened. Both Canada and Mexico have threatened to impose their own tariffs on US goods if needed.

Informing about the 10% tariff being imposed on China, White House said “China plays the central role in the fentanyl crisis that is destroying American lives.”
