DEATSVILLE, Ala. (WSFA) - Blair Berry loves theater and admittedly has a big personality. Like most actors and actresses, she dreamed of the day when she would become an award-winning professional. But, she didn’t dream of winning an Oscar, a Tony, or an Emmy. Blair Berry wanted to be recognized for being a great educator.

“I know this sounds silly, but this is literally one of my biggest dreams! I always wanted to win a Class Act award,” Berry said.

And dreams do come true, someone nominated the Marbury High School teacher for the WSFA 12 News Class Act Award describing her as a “truly fantastic teacher.”

“The funny thing is, I always said I would never be a teacher,” she said. “I taught one year and I watched the kids learn and start understanding the content and different concepts and it just sparked a fire in me.”

A fire fueled by literature and theater, Blair went off to school and got a master’s degree in education. After that, she came back to Deatsville to teach. She’s been working at Marbury High as the 10th grade English theater and theater director for 10 years.

“Theater is not just acting, it’s building that confidence to get out and speak in front of people,” she said. “What I love about literature with high schoolers is that we can read and talk about stories. They can gain knowledge from those stories and use those lessons in their own lives.”

Marbury High School is a special place to Blair Berry. Her family relocated to Deatsville years ago.

“I love this community, that tight-knit community that we have here at Marbury High School,” she said. “I really like it here. I feel at home here.”
