Shell Canada says neighbours of its manufacturing centre in Corunna could see increased flaring and hear additional noise because of a “unit upset” at the refinery and chemical plant.
The upset happened at about 1 p.m. Monday, the company said in a post to the My Community Notification Network.
“It is important to note the flare system is a safety device at the refinery and is a normal and vital part of unit shutdown and startup activities,” the company said.
“All safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols are being followed as we work to safely return the unit to service as quickly as possible.”
Shell said Ontario’s Spills Action Centre has been notified.
The Shell Manufacturing Centre located next to the St. Clair River, between Corunna and Sarnia, produces gasoline, distillates, liquid petroleum gas, heavy oils, pure chemicals and solvents, according to the company’s website
