DNV Collaborates With PIL to Integrate Hydrogen into PIL’s Gas Network Asset in India

DNV, an independent energy expert and assurance provider, will collaborate with Pipeline Infrastructure Limited (PIL) to integrate blended hydrogen into PIL’s India-based gas trunkline asset, including transmission pipeline, spur lines and interconnect, compressor, valve, and metering stations and equipment.

DNV will also help PIL to assess the suitability of its existing gas networks and other assets to incorporate hydrogen at a range of blending levels (5%, 10%, 15%, 50%, and 100%). The network’s assessment will cover pipeline integrity, pipeline safety, and network operations with blended hydrogen.

PIL’s initiative is one of India’s hydrogen blended-related projects in the transmission space. The initiative comes after the Indian government launched its National Hydrogen Mission in August 2021, targeting 5 million tons of hydrogen production annually by 2030.

The mission aims to transform India into a green hydrogen hub, help the country meet its climate goal, and make it a major producer and exporter of hydrogen to Europe, Japan, and South Korea by leveraging the country’s significant renewable energy potential.

Cost-cutting Strategy

DNV’s Energy Transmission Outlook 2021 predicts that the Indian subcontinent will demand 25 million tons of hydrogen per annum by 2050, primarily for ammonia production, transportation, and refining. The report also predicts a strong growth in renewable generation in India, particularly hydropower, wind, and solar photovoltaic, which will account for 65% of the country’s electricity generation mix by 2050.

“Repurposing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen is 10-30% of the cost of building new pure hydrogen networks. DNV is pleased to play a role in this by supporting PIL to transition its gas network to incorporate blended hydrogen to support local industries. In so doing, DNV will leverage its technical expertise and methodology to help our clients meet their emission reduction goals while retaining the use of their existing infrastructure,” said Brice Le Gallo, VP and Regional Director APAC, Energy Systems at DNV.

Incorporating blended hydrogen with the existing natural gas infrastructure will facilitate the use of cleaner gas, help countries like India smoothly transition to a cleaner and decarbonized future, and offer new business opportunities.

According to Varadaraj Salian, DNV Energy Systems’ Market Area Manager – India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, the initiative will enable PIL to engage its stakeholders in developing and setting realistic decarbonization goals.
