Haiti - Politic : Moïse promises that 2021 will be the year of the Constitution, elections and electricity...
During his speech on January 1st marking the 217th anniversary of Haiti's independence, President Jovenel Moïse gave a brief historical reminder of this battle for independence as well as the numerous efforts made by the Indigenous army for the conquest of our freedom as a people. He emphasized with force and conviction the importance of the unity which made it possible to win the battle of Vertières against the French army.

He spoke of the need for different political actors to put aside their divisions and disagreements and open up to dialogue. He recalled that "we have been fighting each other for a long time" and that has never brought us anything positive. On the contrary, "our divisions have contributed to destroy the country", estimating "If we suffer today, it is because us Haitians are responsible for the cause of our own misfortunes"

Moïse consecrated the year 2021 as the year during which he must fulfill all the promises he made to the population during his electoral campaign "The year 2021 is an important year for the future of Haiti is the year of the Constitution, elections and electricity. To achieve this, he believes that a fierce fight against insecurity is necessary.

"We all agree that there is a problem within the Government. There is no balance between the three powers of the State [...] Corrupt oligarchs use institutions to prevent the State from serving the people," denounced the Head of State.

In addition, Moïse criticized the current Constitution which excludes more than 3 million Haitians living outside the country, stating "The reform of the Constitution is not a private project, but that of the whole of society [...] it is about governance, the well-being of the country and the inclusion of the diaspora in the political affairs of its country [...] this new Constitution must preserve all the democratic gains that the Constitution of 1987 gave us. It must create more harmony between the three powers of the State [...] it must be simple, clear and easily applicable. It must be modern and correspond to our culture as a people and satisfy the aspirations of the majority of the population. It is only under these conditions that it will find its legitimacy in the eyes of the people [...]" assuring that he is not a candidate and will not be after the constitutional change, he recalled that this new mother law will be submitted to a popular referendum.
