Delaware sees records tourism levels, spending

The numbers have been crunched, and Delaware’s Tourism Office says a record number of travelers are visiting Delaware. According to the agency 9 million people visited the first state in 2016, and with them they brought $3.3 billion. Secretary of State Jeff Bullock says the numbers show why tourism is such a crucial industry in Delaware. The Tourism office estimates visitors spent $504 million in local and state taxes and fees, which they say without that spending, Delaware households would have to make up $1400 each. People are mainly coming from Mid-Atlantic metro areas, with Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, and Washington D.C. residents making up over 2/3rds of tourists.
