The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is appealing for persons to desist from the unsafe practice of using illegal connections, which it says can result in loss of life and property.

The appeal comes in light of the electrocution of a man in Clarendon.

The 55-year-old male resident of Denbigh lost his life on Tuesday when he was electrocuted by an illegal connection at his home.

The JPS says about 18 per cent of the total energy it generates is lost through electricity theft across the island.

The main parishes contributing to this occurrence are Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon and St James.

JPS says electricity theft leads to poor power quality, outages and higher electricity prices.

The country's sole electricity distributor says it has been carrying out public education in a number of high theft communities.
