As temperature soars above 32 degrees in Phuentsholing, frequent power disruptions in the town have left residents irked.

It has been few days since the town started experiencing power disruptions.

A shopkeeper in the heart of the town, Namgay, said power disruption means a loss for his business.

“It affects our business,” he said, adding that he didn’t understand the cause behind the power cuts. “Power disruption also affects water connection.”

He said Phuentsholing is the biggest commercial hub in the country and erratic power supply affect businesses.

Namgay said customers across the border say Jaigaon was better these days. “Bhutan Power Corporation (BPC) should solve this problem.”

Another businessman, who runs a labour agent and a diagnostic centre, Sonam said his business depends on electricity as x-rays and ultrasounds have to be done.

Krishna from Ramitey village in Phuentsholing gewog also said power disruption is frequent this year.

Meanwhile, Phuentsholing is experiencing such power outage after an incident on May 8, where the 11kv switchgear was burnt at the BPC’s power substation.

BPC’s electricity services division head, Sonam Tshewang, said there is frequent power disruption, as they were working to normalise the 11kv system.

Although the system was normalised on June 10, he said there were still some settings to be completed, for which power supply had to be turned off.

He assured that henceforth, there wouldn’t be any such problems.

BPC had notified residents in areas where the power supply was stopped due to works to normalise 11kv system.
