Elementary students evacuated due to odor of smoke at North Huntingdon school
Authorities evacuated students Thursday from Sheridan Terrace Elementary School in North Huntingdon after an odor of smoke was detected in the building, a Westmoreland County public safety department supervisor said.
The odor at Morris Avenue school was reported just before 1 p.m. Firefighters responding at the scene said burned food was found on the second floor, and that an odor of smoke was detected coming from the auditorium.
Someone burned popcorn, and the smell got into the school's ventilation system, a school district spokesman said.
Students returned to class around 1:30 p.m.
